Have you ever felt overwhelmed in your code learning process? Perhaps you became frustrated, gave up and turned off the computer? When you are new to the big world of code it is common to feel a little over your head. But have no fear! Here are five practices to help you stay cool, calm and collected during your early coding learning journey.

1. Make Fellow Coding Friends

The world of coding is vast, and can be a little scary, but you don’t have to travel it alone. Meeting others within your field will not only help you advance your skills, but it’s a great way to network. You can do this by joining groups on LinkedIn, Facebook, or by searching through hashtags on Twitter. Don’t be shy and start some conversations with some code buddies online.

2. Dedicate 20 Minutes a Day

Any coding language will be hard to learn, and very easy to forget at first, so I suggest dedicating 20 minutes a night (or more if you like) to a code learning session to keep you practicing the language.

3. Ask Questions

Keep a notepad with you when you decide to buckle down and get coding. Write down questions you have, simple or complicated, and ask fellow coding friends, forums or mentors when you get a chance. Let the knowledge of others guide you in the right direction.

4. Never Compare Your Skills

It can sometimes seem like classmates, colleagues or friends are far beyond your own coding knowledge. Don’t let this discourage you! You are a unique individual with valuable strengths and weaknesses just like them. Let their advanced knowledge motivate you, rather than inhibit you. If they can do it, so can you!

5. Don’t Forget to Have Fun and Be Proud

The world of coding is pretty awesome and rewarding, but remember to give yourself credit, and continuously find new ways to have fun with it!
